Art Classes: February –April 2020
The Atherton Arts Foundation is proud to continue an expanded schedule of art classes this winter, January –March, 2020. Whether you are new to any of these subjects or an experienced artist, you are welcome by our team of excellent and enthusiastic instructors.
All classes meet in the Evans Design Center, located in the basement of the main house at Holbrook Palmer Park, 150 Watkins Ave. ,Atherton

LINE & WASH

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2020 LINE & WASH CAMELLIA
9:30 am – 3:30 pm
The 1910 technique of Line & Wash (pen and water color) will be used to reproduce an antique Camellia painting by Shado Kawarazaki.
All supplies provided (if needed) for a fee. Supplies needed will be watercolor paint, palette, pilot pen (black ink…contact instructor for size/brand)
STILL LIFE NEW Class & Instructor!!!

FRIDAY’S FEBRUARY 28 – MARCH 27 (5 weeks)
Hau’s a very accomplished artist in many mediums. He will start still life classes with the student’s choice of medium: watercolor, color pencil or pen and ink. All students, beginning through advanced are welcome. Students will learn compositions, shape, shadows and color while depicting a set still life. All 5 classes are recommended to gain success. Supplies will be provided (for an additional fee of $10, watercolor paper and paint will be provided) if necessary. Bring you i-phone or i-pad to take pictures of the still life, so you may continue your work at home if desired.

Learn the style of an aft form with ‘structured patterns (Zentangle). It’s a great way to relax and a fun way to create your own fascinating images and patterns. Imagine what you can dreate while being delayed a the airport, enjoying an afternoon at the pool or just wanting to unwind!

SATURDAY, APRIL 4, and continued APRIL 11,2020
Enjoy being guided a delightful experience in the park! Bonnie will discuss various ideas/themes/genre of writing and using words before we embrace the park through our mind, heart, and eyes…contour drawing and word expression! Bring a pencil, drawing pen, (or a few colored pencils if you’d like…we do have some for you to borrow) and a small artist notebook. Enjoy lunch in the Arts center or outside.
LANDSCAPE FROM A PHOTO NEW Class & Instructor!!!

Bring a favorite landscape photo you have (from a favorite destination, vacation or magazine) or choose one provided for you. Yvonne will explain composition, color, technique of using gouache and water color and assist you in completing your 6X8” landscape! Great for beginners, as well as intermediate painters. Supplies provided if necessary (Paint/canvas/paper/brush/palette)

Instructor will surprise students with fun, exciting and interesting specimens from which to choose!
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2020 FROM THE BULB UP
Students will choose a bulb specimen of their choice and approach it at their desired involvement or level: bulb to flower, dissecting specimen to show reproductive parts (scientific illustration), blooming part only…GREAT for BEGINNERS!
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2020 FROM THE BULB UP
See above for course description. This may be your first day or second day, i.e. continuation of the February15th class
TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2020 ICELAND POPPY
This colorful winter flower will be drawn, emphasis on the ‘hairy’ texture of sepals and stem, gracefulness and curves of the stem and the large number of leaves at ground level. Bring your chart of greens to find the perfect green for stem and leaves!
SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2020 NCSBA Course/Tour: CAMELLIA TOUR & DRAWING
Northern California Society of Botanical Artist will be ‘hosting’ this class, beginning with a tour of a magnificent camellia garden followed with drawing in colored pencil (or watercolor if you wish) a camellia specimen
Course registration fee: $40 member of NCSAB, $50 non members
SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2020 SUCCULENTS (revisited)
We will revisit the specimen group, Succulents. You may bring your drawing from a couple years ago and add to it, or being a new drawing. STAY TUNED: This maybe a ROADTRIP class to Half Moon Bay, 92 Succulent!!!! I am looking into the accommodations there…choosing/purchasing one of their succulents, drawing on the premises, sharing your skills with customers and other potential artists! If we are unable to do the destination class, we will stay at the Art Center.
TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2020 SPRING BLOOMS FROM THE GARDEN
Choose a specimen from a garden…could be tulips, iris, sweet peas, foxglove, etc.
TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2020 TEXTURES…AH NUTS
We’ll study and draw several textures, using NUTS (whole and cracked)! If time allows, we’ll explore other textures such as lamb’s ear, liquidambar seed pods, etc.

SATURDAY, MAY 2 FOUR SQUARE
Not the game we played as children, but we will be drawing 4 squares of the same specimen…different angles, different growth pattern/development or with different accompaniments. This may be done on four (small…6×6”) different papers on one large paper divided into 4 equally sized ‘windows’.
